Computer Science technology applied to data collection and data managament OceanDocs
Guzmán, O.; González, M.; Carrasco, J.; Bernal, C.; Vera, C.; Troncoso, M..
IFOP, as non profit marine research institute has the mission to provide to the Under Secretariat of Fisheries in Chile, the technical information and scientific basis for the regulation of Chilean Fisheries. For this purpose it has 150 Scientific Observers distributed throughout the Chilean coast. With the intention to improve the process of data production, a group of scientists has developed a new computer science system for data collection, data management, and automatic publication of fishing and biological indicators in Web Page. The system allow to collect data of: fishing trips; captures and species composition; length distribution and biological variables. For this is being carried out the following process. Collection of data in Pocket PC with...

Data-Recording System and Sampling Strategy in the Western Indian Ocean Purse-Seine Fishery OceanDocs
Thomas, A.; Dufour, O.; Pianet, R.; Morón, J..
The present data-recording system used in the Seychelles to compile the tuna purse-seine statistics in the WIO was established by ORSTOM at the beginning of the fishery (1982/3) for the French fleet, and then extended to the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) and Madagascar in 1991-92 for all fleets. After several modifications, it has been working efficiently for the last ten years, making it possible to build a very comprehensive tuna database for the purse-seine fleets since the beginning of the fishery. The extension to Madagascar started in 1992, within the framework of the Regional Tuna Project. A specific laboratory, the(Unité Statistique Thonière d’Antsiranana (USTA) was installed, the work being done in collaboration between ORSTOM, the Direction...

Estudio biológico pesquero y estado de situación del recurso raya volantín, en aguas interiores de la X a XII Regiones OceanDocs
Céspedes, R.; Licandeo, R.; Toledo, C.; Cerna, F.; Donoso, M.; Adasme, L..

Report of the first session of the IOTC Working Party on Tropical Tunas. OceanDocs
The emphasis of the meeting was placed on bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus), but a number of the conclusions and recommendations reached apply equally to all tropical tunas. A review of fisheries and available data confirmed that both longline and purse seine fisheries for bigeye tuna have been expanding rapidly over the current decade. There are however major gaps in catch and effort data available, in particular major longline fleets operating from Indonesia and several eastern Indian Ocean ports and some which are engaged in illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing. Furthermore, size data for most longline fisheries are generally missing or of doubtful quality. A number of recommendations on research were formulated, dealing with improvements in...

Sampling the catch of fishing trawlers OceanDocs
Okpanife, M. O..
This paper discusses the sample the sample design and estimation method for sampling the commercial catches of fishing trawlers. The result of the application of the design to Nigerian Fishing Trawlers in 1981 is presented. The conclusion that Nigerian Trawlers and not catching undersized fish as at 1981 is valid only on the assumption that there is no dumping of undersized fish at sea.

Seychelles demersal fishery an analysis of data relating to four key demersal species OceanDocs
Mees, C. C..
Seychelles demersal fishery is described based on historic catch and effort data, and on biological studies of four key species: Batrican (Pristipomoides filamentosus), Job Gris (Aprion virescens), Bourgeois (Lutjanus sebae), and Maconde (Epinephelus chlorostigma). During the period 1985 - 1990 demersal species formed on average 33_310= of the total annual landings of the local fishing fleet. Schooners and whalers were the most important boat types engaging in this fishery, and more recently, a mother ship dory fishing operation. Demersal species constituted 77_310= of all local fish exports over this period. In 1990 approximately 2,000 tonnes of demersal species were landed of which 500 tonnes were exported. Lutjanids comprised 62_310= of the demersal...

Seychelles tuna bulletin: Year 2007 OceanDocs
Data used to generate the tables and figures presented here are based on daily catch and effort forms (logbooks) returned from fishing vessels that are licensed to fish in the Seychelles EEZ and for purse seiners, as well as from data collected via the tuna sampling programme conducted during transshipment in Port Victoria. Sometimes there are delays in these being received at SFA, especially for longliners that often spend up to a year at sea, and for purse seiners the delays are usually during and just after the second quarter of the year when most vessels are fishing in the Mozambique Channel and are not necessarily using Port Victoria for transshipment.

Spiny lobster fishery on the Mahe Plateau : November 2001 - January 2002 OceanDocs
Payet, R.J.; Isidore, M..
The present report reviews the spiny lobster fishery on the Mahe Plateau for the 2001/2002 fishing season. The monitoring programme, set up in 1992, was continued this season to collect more information on the spiny lobster stock in order to improve and maintain proper management of this resource around the Mahe Plateau. For the 2001/2002 lobster fishing season, a total of 40 licenses were issued namely twenty seven on Mahe, five on Praslin and eight on La Digue. Similar to previous seasons, the most frequently used lobster fishing technique was snorkelling which involved 32 fishing units, whilst only four units used the trap method and one used both snorkelling and trap. For this three-month fishing season, a total of 5.5 tonnes of spiny lobsters were...

The development of the lobster fishery in the Seychelles OceanDocs
Bautil, B.R.R..
Two different groups of lobsters are of commercial importance in the Seychelles: spiny lobsters and slipper lobsters. The spiny lobsters are: Panulirus penicillatus, Panulirus longipes, Panulirus versicolor and Panulirus ornatus. Fishing for spiny lobster in Seychelles is a traditional activity in the shallow waters surrounding the main granitic Islands. Fishing is conducted at night by skin divers operating with lights. Following the development of the tourist industry during the seventies the local demand for lobsters increased to several tonnes a year. After being open for many years, the fishery was closed from 1983 to 1989. The fishery was reopen from December 1989 to May 1990, during which time an estimated 10 tonnes of spiny lobsters were supplied...

Updated standardized CPUE of bigeye caught by the Japanese longline fishery in the Indian Ocean. OceanDocs
Okamoto, H.; Miyabe, N..
The catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of bigeye caught by the Japanese longline fishery in the Indian Ocean was standardized up to 1997 using general linear model (GLM) analysis. Standardized CPUE in the tropical area, which was relatively stable, ranged from 6 to 8 fish per 1,000 hooks in 1979-1987 and decreased continuously to about 4 in 1997. In contrast, CPUE in the southern area did not show the stable trend of the tropical areas, especially after 1990. This unstable CPUE pattern in the southern area in recent years seems to be derived mainly from the shift of targeting in longline operations. If the trend derived from analysis for 1952-1976 is included, current CPUE is estimated to be about 33 % of that in 1954.
